Am I Dyslexic Q&A

.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if I am, or my child is, dyslexic?
Dyslexia is complex - no two dyslexics experience exactly the same issues. Some days the symptoms are worse, some days they are better. The one thing that is consistent is the inconsistency. However there are certain issues that often reoccur. One of these on its own may not indicate dyslexia, but exhibiting 10 or more of the core characteristics is a strong indication that dyslexia may be causing the problem. Take the online Dyslexia assessment here.
Can dyslexia be cured?
No, dyslexia cannot be cured because it is not an illness, or a physical defect. But it can be managed and you can have the ability to control the impact on your life. Recent research has confirmed, using brain imaging, that a dyslexic brain uses different areas to process information. The problems associated with dyslexia are just symptoms that are caused by the brain working differently. The Davis Programme used by Remarkable Minds addresses these symptoms and also looks at the cause.
Does dyslexia run in families?
There is strong evidence to suggest that yes dyslexia is inherited. As the cause of dyslexia is the way a brain processes information, it is likely to be passed on genetically, as are other traits. Dyslexia is also part of a bigger picture that includes ADHD/ADD, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, Aspergers, autism, and dysgraphia. They are all linked, like the branches of a tree, and you may or may not have a combination or an element of these conditions.
How is Davis different to other dyslexia programmes?
Davis is one of the very few dyslexia programmes that is NOT computer based. It is a hands-on, practical, proven method of learning that suits visual learners/dyslexics. Can you learn to ride a bike by repetitive computer exercises? Repetition and rote learning does NOT work for picture thinkers. Davis Programmes actually use imagination skills by learning through creative methods including 3D clay modelling.

Davis Programmes also address the personal well-being and confidence of the individual, rather than just the mechanics of reading and writing. Sitting in front of a computer alone cannot help address the stress and self confidence that learning issues can cause.
What ages do you help?
We can help any age upwards of 5 years old. The Davis Programmes are suitable for anyone who is a visual thinker and wants to address any learning issues they are facing - from children and teenagers, to adults and senior citizens. The Davis Programme used by Remarkable Minds has helped a wide variety of people from all ages and all walks of life. The only thing required is want to learn an easier way.
Is Davis able to help with other issues apart from dyslexia?
Yes, If you think of dyslexia as a branch on a tree, the other branches are conditions such as ADHD/ADD, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, autism, and Aspergers. A visual thinking style is common in all these conditions and the Davis Programme has had much success in dealing with these conditions. How much does your programme cost?
There is an hourly charge of $75.00 (+gst). The Davis Programme used by Remarkable Minds is tailored to your needs, issues and goals - thus the hours needed are dependent on what you want to achieve. We can discuss payment options during your initial consultation (which is free of charge).
Do you provide resource materials?
All the materials you need will be provided in a Davis Kit which is given out during the course of the programme (such as reference sheets, an audio CD, a fabulous dictionary, koosh balls, clay for modelling etc).
Will I have to stay with my child during their sessions?
This depends on the age of your child and the programme they are completing. However, a younger child may wish for the parent to sit in regardless. Often children want to show you their work and successes during the programme so do plan for some time at each pick up. As part of the Davis Programme, you are provided with a Support Training Day. For the Davis Young Learners' Programme, you will be expected to attend at least half of the sessions to ensure you have the right skills to continue the necessary work that needs to completed at home.
Do you have information to provide to my child's teacher?
Yes, I provide you with a written Summary Report for your child. I can also provide a summary of the programme for your child's school/teacher. A school visit can also be arranged if necessary.
